Green Communities In Oregon Are Raging!
There are many residential green communities in Oregon that are just as stylish as they are practical. They have LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications and communities designed with different environmental functions in mind as well as each having it's own unique sense of community and look. There are sustainable communities that fit with every walk of life, and many of these green communities are in Portland, Oregon.
The Clara Vista townhouses are intended for family living. They have options of both three and four bedroom homes with options of two and three story buildings. Their buildings are rebuilt on the property where old urban buildings were to limit excess space being taken up. Gardens, playgrounds and general open spaces are implemented into the complex. Appliances are water and energy efficient and plumbing fixtures are low-flow to reduce the amount of wasted water. Rainwater is harvested for watering vegetation around the buildings and the hot water is heated by solar panels. They've made good use of natural resources with the help of eco builders in Oregon.
In a more suburban setting just outside of Portland, the Olson Woods Apartments were built. The housing is designed for both large and small families, and public transportation is easily accessible. When the complex was constructed the layout of the land was not taken for granted and much of the wetland was preserved. Even invasive plants were removed from the area so that the natural habitat could remain healthy. The landscape around the complex makes it one of the more beautiful eco friendly communities in Oregon. The buildings are made of cement fiberboard siding and use paint that's very low in toxicity and emissions. Fluorescent lights and energy star appliances are used for inside the homes to reduce the amount of energy used.
The Southeast 33rd and Powell Rowhouses are being constructed in the urban setting of Portland. They've been designed for low income families and are meant for purchase, not rent. Unlike some of the other environmentally friendly communities in Oregon, these homes also reduce the need for a car. They are placed within walking distance of public transportation, school, and businesses. Dry wells are in place to reuse rainwater and all water fixtures are low-flow. Energy Star appliances and day light sensors have been installed to reduce energy consumption. Vegetated roof materials are on all of the buildings to reduce run off and also provide an extra source of insulation. 98 percent of the waste materials left over from the construction were recycled.
Senior green communities in Oregon have also been built with a prime example being the Village at Headwaters apartment building. The development of the building actually led to the restoration of a nearby creek. Many places such as grocery stores, shopping centers, and public transportation are located close to the building. Recycled materials were used in the construction of the building including drywall and concrete. The vegetation in the area is all drought-resistant and an irrigation system is used from rainwater.
