Greeny on July 17th, 2008

Wow, it was just announced that Mount Dora, Florida will be home to a green community of about 400 Green homes. A developer in North Carolina supposedly is going to begin plans on the development. Some of its features will be apartments, mansions, townhouses and single-family homes in an eco friendly environment.

Other green details are:

  • Irrigated Zoysia or something similar for the development’s lawns, yards and greenbelts and non irrigated Bahia grass or an alternative natural grass for secondary areas.
  • Rain and soil moisture sensors will be used for homes and irrigated open spaces.
  • Drought-resistant trees will be planted throughout the development.
  • Parks and recreational trails connecting to residential green communities.

  1. We are retiring and looking to buy a Condo/Townhouse in a green community in Florida. I’m very interested in this development at Mount Dora, Florida. Where can I find out about the developer, and when will plans be avaialbe for review. Thank you. Lee

  2. Lee,

If you’d like I can inquire for you, that article was kind of vague about the identity of the developer,

    Thanks for the comment!

  3. Any time builders work with a green consciousness it sets a great example. While mansions by their nature tend not to be very green, any strategies builders can use to reduce their impact are great!

  4. Is this community going to use hydrogen fuel cells for utility power? I know that there is supposedly a community in Florida that will be powered completely by hydrogen fuel cells.

  5. Sean,
Very good question. To be honest, there is not a whole lot of information concerning this green community, I have looked and looked!
I would appreciate it if you did indeed find out they are going to use hydrogen cell energy, let us know and we will credit you for additional information!

    Thanks Sean,

  6. Dagny,
Yes, McMansions are plenty, but just hang around, we will see a tremendous influx of LEED certified builders focusing on sustainability, and more affordable housing….it’s coming!

    Thanks! (Nice clothing site too)

  7. This is similar to an already existing community in Oakland, FL- near Orlando. The development is Bioscaped with native plants and there are parks and trails that connect the community. It’s a castle & cook development.
